When was the last time you took a look at your old competition videos, specifically your defeats? After migrating my photos/videos over to the new photos app on my computer, I stumbled upon an old jiu jitsu competition video that took place a few years back. Somehow every time I see this video I get so upset at myself and always hope for a different outcome as if it were a dream and there is a chance the ending would be different.
I guess what makes this match so special is that I competed against a fighter who was known for doing very well in his jiu jitsu competition path. I felt this was a great opportunity for me to see how well I had developed my game and time to put it to work. Moments before my match began my friend and I had this conversation:
FRIEND: Hey do you know ______?, That guy is competing today, he’s a beast! He wins a lot and I personally rolled with him before. Guys on a different level
ME: Nice! No I don’t know who ______ is. What belt is he?
FRIEND: He’s brown…(I was also brown at the time) wait, what weight class are you?
FRIEND: Nice, him too!… (silence)….. (awkward)……..
I must admit, the guy was tough for sure. Every time I see my match I always beat myself up for not doing things differently. Mid match I was able to get out of a bad bow and arrow choke and felt I saw the light of victory. By every move I was inching my way closer and closer to success until; TAP. He submitted me with a move I was never taught.
Although I hope for a different outcome every single time I see this match, it always seems to serve a purpose for me. To improve my jiu jitsu game for tomorrow. I’m very grateful to have had an opportunity to fight against this person. He added knowledge to my arsenal and experience I can use to show my students for their journey!
